Associate Director, Master Data Transformation & Operations

Role Summary

The Associate Director, Master Data Transformation & Operations (Item Master) is a senior execution and people‑leadership role within the Enterprise Master Data organization. This role is accountable for building, operating, and continuously improving Item Master capabilities that enable reliable end‑to‑end business execution, scalable operations, and data‑driven decision‑making across the enterprise.

While initially focused on Item / Product Master Data, the Associate Director operates within an enterprise MDM model and is expected to support cross‑domain master data needs (Finance, Supplier, Customer, Employee) as required, ensuring alignment to enterprise standards, governance, and operating principles.

This role aligns to a Build / Run / Optimize operating model and serves as the primary operational owner and team leader for Item Master execution. The Associate Director leads a team of practitioners, translates enterprise MDM strategy into disciplined day‑to‑day operations, and ensures master data is stable, controlled, and continuously improving.

Business Impact

This role ensures that Item Master Data:

  • Behaves predictably and consistently across systems and processes

  • Enables faster, better‑informed operational and commercial decisions

  • Reduces downstream disruption, rework, and manual intervention

  • Supports ERP stability, process excellence, and automation readiness

  • Improves compliance, auditability, and change discipline

Item Master is treated as an operationally critical enterprise asset, not a transactional back‑office activity._

Core Accountabilities (Build / Run / Optimize)

BUILD – Capability Stand‑Up, Knowledge Transfer & Change Delivery

  • Serve as the execution lead for Item Master capability build‑out, aligned to enterprise MDM standards, definitions, and governance

  • Lead knowledge transfer (KT) and transition activities to ensure sustainable, independent operations post‑Foundation

  • Translate enterprise Item Master standards into clear operating procedures, including:

    • SOPs, job aids, decision trees, and exception‑handling guidance

    • Create / change / validate workflows and controls

    • Documentation and evidence standards aligned to audit and compliance expectations

  • Partner with IT, ERP teams, and Data platforms to ensure Item Master changes are implemented correctly, tested thoroughly, and released safely

  • Establish foundational operational instrumentation, including:

    • Intake and prioritization mechanisms for Item Master requests

    • KPIs for cycle time, quality, stability, and rework

    • Readiness and stabilization metrics during transition

  • Support enterprise initiatives such as new item introductions, system integrations, entity setup, and transition‑related stabilization

RUN – Operational Ownership, Stability & Controls

  • Own day‑to‑day Item Master operations, ensuring predictable, high‑quality execution

  • Ensure adherence to enterprise definitions, attribute standards, hierarchies, and lifecycle controls

  • Act as the primary operational escalation point for Item Master issues that are high‑impact, cross‑functional, or systemic

  • Operate a tiered support and escalation model, including:

    • Issue triage and prioritization

    • Root‑cause analysis and corrective actions

    • Validation of fixes and prevention of repeat defects

  • Safeguard data quality, compliance, and audit readiness through disciplined execution and documentation

  • Coordinate closely with Process Excellence, GPOs, and downstream teams to minimize operational disruption

OPTIMIZE – Simplify, Standardize & Improve

  • Continuously identify opportunities to simplify Item Master structures, reduce manual workarounds, and eliminate unnecessary complexity

  • Drive standardization of Item Master patterns, attributes, and operating practices

  • Maintain and prioritize a continuous improvement backlog informed by operational data, issue trends, and business feedback

  • Partner with Enterprise MDM leadership to evolve Item Master maturity over time

  • Enable automation, analytics, and AI readiness as outcomes of stable operations and strong data discipline

People Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of Item Master practitioners, including performance management and capability development

  • Establish clear roles, accountability, and standard work across the team

  • Build depth and resilience through cross‑training, documentation, and succession planning

  • Foster a culture of enterprise‑first thinking, disciplined execution, and continuous improvement

  • Support workforce planning, onboarding, and skill development aligned to future‑state MDM needs

Cross‑Domain & Enterprise Alignment

  • Operate within the enterprise MDM control plane and governance model

  • Support Supplier, Customer, and Employee master data initiatives as needed to ensure end‑to‑end alignment

  • Partner with Enterprise MDM leadership, FAST, IT, and business stakeholders to balance speed, control, and enterprise outcomes

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • 8–10 years of experience across master data, data operations, transformation, or enterprise systems

  • Demonstrated experience leading teams, including coaching, performance management, and talent development

  • Hands‑on experience with Item / Product Master Data in ERP or enterprise platforms

  • Strong understanding of operational controls, data quality, and change discipline

  • Proven ability to balance operational stability with change delivery

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting multiple master data domains (Item, Supplier, Customer, Employee)

  • Experience operating in global, matrixed organizations

  • Exposure to ERP modernization, automation, analytics, or AI enablement

  • Consulting or internal transformation experience

Why This Role Exists

The Associate Director ensures that Item Master Data works—every day, through every change—while building the team, discipline, and operating model required to scale and continuously improve. This role is a critical bridge between enterprise MDM strategy and reliable operational execution.
