Controls Engineer (Automation) – Shift Role

Role Overview

Reporting to the AutomationManager, the Controls Engineer will play a key role in supporting and maintaining automated manufacturing systems. This position focuses on fault diagnosis, system optimisation, and continuous improvement of automation technologies across the site.

The successful candidate will work closely with maintenance and engineering teams, ensuring high equipment availability and supporting ongoing automation projects. This is ashift-based position, requiring a high level of flexibility to support operations, including providing backup cover when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for automated equipment, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance

  • Perform fault finding, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis across a range of control systems

  • Collaborate closely with maintenance technicians to resolve equipment issues

Support and maintain the following systems:

  • PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)

  • Robotic systems and controllers

  • PC-based control systems

  • Automated instrumentation and control devices

  • Serialisation and track & trace systems

  • Ensure reliable operation ofFloor IT systems,including industrial PCs and HMIs

  • Participate in and support automation projects, upgrades, and system enhancements

  • Contribute to documentation, standardisation, and best practice development within the automation function

Education & Qualifications

  • Degree or higher qualification in: 

  • Electrical Engineering

  • Electronic Engineering

  • Control Systems Engineering

  • or a related discipline

OR

  • Trade-qualified Electrician / Instrumentation / Mechatronics Technician with relevant automation experience

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and hands-on experience will also be considered.

Experience Required

  • Minimum2–3 years’ experiencein a similar automation, controls, or manufacturing environment

  • Proven experience working with PLCs, robotics, SCADA, and industrial control systems

  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills in automated environments

  • Experience working in a high-volume or regulated manufacturing setting is an advantage

  • Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams

  • Ability to plan and execute project work

  • Effective communication skills in a fast-paced environment

Flexibility & Shift Requirements

  • This is ashift-based role, supporting a 24/7 manufacturing operation

  • The successful candidate must demonstrateflexibilityin working patterns

  • Willingness to providebackup and cover supportfor team members when required is essential

  • A strong team-oriented mindset and commitment to operational support is critical
