Your Role:

As the laboratory supervisor, you have overall responsibility for the safe, compliant, organized, and efficient operation of the Acute Systems R&D laboratories at the Plymouth Research Center. Your responsibility spans multiple lab spaces including verification, validation, controls, and general product development.

This hands-on leadership role oversees laboratory facilities, equipment, materials, facilities, procedures, and daily operations. It may include direct oversight of laboratory technicians. The supervisor will establish effective laboratory practices, identify and resolve operational issues, and continuously improve how the laboratories support product development, verification, and validation activities.

We are looking for a proactive and highly accountable leader who takes ownership, follows through on commitments, pays close attention to detail, and builds strong working relationships across the organization.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Lead Laboratory Operations

• Own the overall readiness, organization, safety, compliance, and effectiveness of the Acute Systems laboratories.

• Establish priorities and coordinate laboratory personnel, workspaces, equipment, and materials to support R&D activities.

• Develop and maintain laboratory procedures, checklists, and operating mechanisms.

• Proactively identify operational risks, resource constraints, and improvement opportunities.

• Coordinate laboratory expansions, equipment installations, workspace modifications, and other facility-related activities.

• Communicate laboratory status, priorities, risks, and resource needs to stakeholders and R&D leadership.

Improve Laboratory Efficiency

• Evaluate laboratory workflows and implement improvements that reduce delays, eliminate waste, and make better use of personnel, equipment, materials, and space.

• Apply continuous-improvement practices (such as 6S, visual management, standard work, etc.).

• Establish practical metrics to monitor laboratory readiness, equipment availability, consumable inventory, and service requests.

• Anticipate future laboratory capacity, equipment, infrastructure, and staffing needs.

Manage Equipment and Materials

• Ensure laboratory equipment is available, functional, appropriately maintained, and suitable for its intended use.

• Coordinate equipment calibration, preventive maintenance, qualification, service, troubleshooting, and repair.

• Maintain accurate equipment and material inventories, status information, service records, and designated storage locations.

• Establish effective processes for ordering, receiving, labeling, stocking, storing, and disposing of laboratory materials and consumables.

• Manage vendor relationships, service agreements, warranties, equipment evaluations, and purchasing recommendations.

• Minimize interruptions caused by unavailable equipment, missing materials, or equipment past calibration.

Maintain Safety, Quality, and Compliance

• Ensure laboratory operations comply with applicable Vantive procedures, quality-system requirements, safety requirements, and good documentation practices.

• Partner with Quality, Employee Health and Safety, Facilities, Calibration, and laboratory users to maintain a safe and inspection-ready environment.

• Conduct and coordinate routine laboratory inspections and promptly address unsafe, noncompliant, or inefficient conditions.

• Support internal and external audits and coordinate the resolution of laboratory observations, nonconformances, and corrective actions.

• Promote a culture in which employees identify concerns early, take ownership, and consistently follow laboratory requirements.

Lead and Develop the Team

• Supervise laboratory support personnel and provide clear priorities, work direction, technical guidance, and coaching.

• Set expectations for responsiveness, quality, and accountability.

• Develop cross-training and coverage plans for critical laboratory responsibilities.

• Build a respectful and collaborative team culture that encourages initiative, problem solving, and continuous improvement.

What You’ll Bring:

Minimum Requirements

• Associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, biomedical technology, electronics, mechanical technology, laboratory science, or a related technical discipline.

• Relevant experience supporting or managing an engineering, R&D, test, verification and validation, service, or regulated laboratory environment.

• Demonstrated ability to coordinate people, equipment, materials, vendors, and competing priorities.

• Experience developing or improving procedures, workflows, or laboratory practices.

• Working knowledge of equipment maintenance, calibration coordination, inventory control, workplace safety, and technical documentation.

• Strong organizational, written communication, and interpersonal skills.

• Demonstrated attention to detail and a consistent record of following issues through to completion.

• Ability to work primarily on site in a hands-on laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, biomedical engineering, operations, laboratory science, or a related field.

• Five or more years of relevant laboratory, technical, engineering-support, or operations experience.

• Previous experience supervising technicians or technical support personnel.

• Experience working in a medical-device, life-sciences, pharmaceutical, or other regulated product-development environment.

• Familiarity with design verification and validation, medical-device quality systems, audit readiness, good documentation practices, nonconformance management, and corrective and preventive actions.

• Hands-on experience troubleshooting and testing electromechanical medical devices.

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. At Vantive, we are committed to equitable pay for all employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $88,000 to $121,000 annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than of the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based on upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
