The Health & Safety Specialist plays a key role in strengthening Vantive's safety culture and ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations across the Castlebar and Swinford sites. This position provides technical expertise, leads critical Health & Safety programs, and partners with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvement in workplace safety, employee wellbeing, and risk reduction.

The successful candidate will work closely with site leadership, operations, engineering, maintenance, quality, and support functions to proactively identify hazards, implement effective controls, and foster a culture where safety is a shared responsibility.

Duties & Responsibilities

Health & Safety Compliance & Governance

  • Support the implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Health & Safety policies, procedures, and site programs.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable health and safety legislation, corporate standards, and ISO 45001 management system requirements.
  • Provide expert Health & Safety guidance to site leadership, engineering, operations, maintenance, and support functions.
  • Support internal and external audits and inspections, ensuring timely completion of corrective actions.
  • Assist in the preparation, review, and reporting of Health & Safety metrics, compliance activities, and management reviews.

Health & Safety Risk Management

  • Lead and support risk assessments for equipment, processes, tasks, chemicals, and ergonomic activities.
  • Identify workplace hazards and ensure appropriate control measures are implemented and maintained.
  • Support Health & Safety reviews associated with new equipment, facility changes, process modifications, and capital projects.
  • Conduct routine workplace inspections, GEMBA walks, and safety audits to verify compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support contractor safety programs, permit-to-work systems, and safe systems of work.
  • Promote proactive hazard identification and safety observation programmes.

Incident Prevention & Investigation

  • Lead or support incident investigations, near-miss reviews, and root cause analyses.
  • Ensure effective implementation and verification of corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Monitor incident trends and recommend actions to reduce risk and prevent recurrence.
  • Facilitate lessons learned and share best practices across site functions.
  • Support the development of strategies to drive continual improvement in safety performance.

Emergency Preparedness & Response

  • Coordinate and strengthen emergency response programs across the site.
  • Support emergency response teams through training, drills, and preparedness activities.
  • Maintain site emergency response procedures and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in incident response activities as required.

Safety Culture & Employee Engagement

  • Promote a positive safety culture through coaching, communication, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Deliver and coordinate Health & Safety training programmes for employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Partner with people leaders to embed safety ownership and accountability within teams.
  • Support behavioural safety initiatives and campaigns that drive employee participation and awareness.
  • Champion continuous improvement activities that enhance workplace safety and wellbeing.

Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor and report Health & Safety KPIs and performance metrics.
  • Analyse performance trends and recommend improvement actions.
  • Support site Health & Safety objectives and strategic initiatives.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to drive operational excellence and risk reduction.
  • Maintain accurate Health & Safety records and documentation.

Education & Experience Required

  • Third-level qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Science, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a Health & Safety role within manufacturing, pharmaceutical, medical device, or another highly regulated environment.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, inspections, audits, and safety training.
  • Strong knowledge of Irish Health & Safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working within an ISO 45001 management system environment is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder management skills.
